Art for Social Change: Short-Term ESC Volunteering in Portugal
Are you eager to put your creativity to good use, explore a new culture, and contribute to a meaningful cause? This short-term European Solidarity Corps (ESC) project in Amarante, Portugal, offers a unique opportunity to merge artistic expression with social impact.
Hosted by ADESCO Cooperative, this volunteering experience focuses on using art—especially painting and mural work—as a tool for community inclusion and personal empowerment. As a volunteer, you’ll collaborate with other young people and the local team in all stages of an inspiring mural project: from brainstorming and sketching to completing large-scale artwork that brightens public spaces and connects people.
What You’ll Do
Your main tasks will revolve around:
-
Designing and creating a public mural under guidance from experienced coordinators
-
Organising inclusive and creative activities with children, seniors, and people with special needs
-
Helping foster a sense of belonging, expression, and solidarity in the community
-
Supporting the broader mission of ADESCO to promote integration and social inclusion through art
This is more than just painting walls—it’s about using creativity to bridge generations, cultures, and experiences.
Accommodation and Daily Life
You’ll live in a vibrant youth centre together with other volunteers. The centre offers shared rooms, Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, and communal areas including a small restaurant/bar. Meals (mainly vegetarian with protein options) are provided from Monday to Saturday, and a food allowance (€20/week) is given for Sundays. The location encourages a communal lifestyle and spontaneous creative exchange among peers.
Learning and Language Support
Before your arrival, you’ll have access to the Portuguese basics course via the EU Academy. Once on site, you’ll receive introductory lessons in the local language from long-term volunteers, helping you to integrate more fully into daily life and connect with the people you’re supporting.
Who Can Apply?
This opportunity is open to anyone aged 18–30 from ESC programme countries. You don’t need professional artistic experience—just a passion for creative expression and an open, inclusive mindset. A willingness to work with people of all backgrounds, particularly children and the elderly, is essential. You should also be ready to adapt, contribute actively, and participate fully throughout the project. Please note that your total ESC volunteering time (past and present) cannot exceed 12 months.
