DIY – Digital Intercultural Youth is a YOUTH EXCHANGE which aims at fighting against racism, intolerance, extremism movements through non formal education and media education.
It promotes also intercultural learning and active tolerance by the use of digital activism.
This Youth Exchange will involve 27 young people from 5 countries (Italy, Belgium, Estonia, Slovakia, Spain), some of them facing difficulties due to their socio-cultural and economic disadvantaged background.
– increasing the involvement of young people in the promotion of active tolerance and intercultural understanding, and letting them know how to use digital tools to become multipliers of these values
– developing young people’s critical thinking in relation to media products and helping them to be able to better interpret the messages disseminated by the various media
– making young people known media as a tool for active participation in society (digital activism)
– enhancing young people’s technical skills with regard to the creation of digital content such as videos, photos, voice messages, stories, etc. to express oneself and one’s own points of view.
All the activities will be based on active participation, peer-to-peer learning, and non-formal education methods such as games, work in team, brainstorming, simulation, role games with the aim to facilitate group dynamics and deepen phenomena like xenophobia, racism and discrimination. Participants will learn about cultural diversity and main factors that brings to stereotypes and prejudices.
Participants will explore media education and digital activism through practical workshops in order to develop competencies on critical reading of media, to use media in promotion of human rights and tolerance, to exchange their views and for expressing active participation in society.
Each national group will take responsibility for one of the workshops according skills of participants.
By the end of the Youth Exchange participants will create a digital media product for the promotion of active tolerance and tickle intercultural awareness.
Working hours are about 6 per day including breaks, all participants are required to participate actively in all activities, domestic chores included!
Leaders will have to contribute in the realization of a booklet which will contains activities implemented, do-do not tips, suggestion for preparation, other relevant issues experienced during the YE.
TARGET GROUP AND PROFILE OF PARTICIPANTS
Group composition: 4 participants + 1 experienced leader.
Each national group has to involve 2 young people with fewer opportunities in particular
Age of participants: 18-25 years old (young people with fewer opportunities can be 17 years old)
Profile of leaders: previous experiences in facilitation of activities and group management, ability in working and involving people with fewer opportunities into activities and group dynamics.
Profile of participants: interested in the topic, to develop competences in critical thinking and improve the use of media for communication.
ACCOMMODATION and FOOD during the Youth Excahnge
All participants will be host in a big house managed by nuns, in the upper district of Termini Imerese in province of Palermo.
The venue is 10km far from Termini Imerese railway station easy to reach by Palermo Central railway
station. Termini Imerese is an industrial town with services and facilities.
Bedrooms: little double single rooms for max two people (divided per gender and different nationality). Rooms are divided in two halls in the same floor.
Toilets and showers are in sharing among all (in total 5 toilets and 6 showers + extra 3 toilets and 2 showers).
A kitchen is available.
There is no WIFI. We will try to have a limited portable internet connection which can be used only for activities.
Food will be organized by external catering or a chef who will prepare meals for the group.
There is possibility to prepare food in case of international evening.
Participants will be asked to contribute in cleaning dishes, rooms, toilet and shower and common space and also in cooking in special occasion.
Board and lodging will be provided by Associazione Icarus during the whole period of the Youth Exchange.
