Description of Work
In general, volunteers help organize and develop the different activities. Every day, except Sundays, there is a class or workshop for the children of the Island. All children who want to, can participate. In addition to this, together with the local community, participants organize beach cleaning days, pet days or any other activity that requires the support of volunteers.
The work includes:
- Helping, planning and carrying out regular activities (art, recycling, technology, environment and language workshops).
- Assisting in water sports training.
- Helping with extracurricular events (beach cleanups, recycling projects, festivals, recycling days, etc.)
- Supporting children and young people in their schoolwork.
- Taking care of the animals of the foundation and rescued animals.
- Sharing time and knowledge with children (play, chat, etc.) and being an example for them.
On Saturdays, volunteers and local young people visit other beaches where water sports such as surfing, and paddleboarding are taught to the children and young people of the foundation. All knowledge and skills are welcome for the development of classes and/or workshops. With your help we will create more opportunities and a better future for the children of the island.
Accommodation and food
The participants will stay at the Foundation’s facilities. Each volunteer will have a private room with a private bathroom. The kitchen will be shared with the other volunteers. Participants will be provided with food supplies and they will cook and prepare their own meals together. Once a week, a member of the local community will be with the volunteers teaching them to cook typical food from the Colombian coast. The food provided will be vegetarian/pescatarian. Since one of the main activities on the island is fishing, we can support the local community by buying food from them.
Project Partner
This camp will be carried out in cooperation with Amigos del Mar Foundation, which is a non-profit organization that seeks to contribute to the social development, sport and educational growth of young people from Tierra Bomba Island. This is achieved by motivating young people to return to school, and training them in discipline and values, through water sports, cultural and environmental activities.
To motivate them and train them in discipline, they involve them in nautical life, teaching them to surf, windsurf, stand up paddle board and kitesurf. Likewise, they provide complementary education for girls and boys on the island and offer young people productive opportunities to learn, take part and earn extra money.
Location and leisure
Cartagena is a city that is located on the shores of the Caribbean Sea. The city has several archipelagos and islands around that are truly a paradise, among these is Tierra Bomba Island. Cartagena brings together the charm of colonial architecture, the excitement of a vivid nightlife, fascinating cultural festivals, and lush landscapes, to bring you a unique experience. Tierra Bomba is located just 10 minutes from Cartagena by boat. Tierra Bomba has become an important tourist destination, thanks to its white sand beaches and blue waters, in addition to the historical and natural riches it possesses and the numerous options it offers to visitors. During free time, volunteers can go to the different beaches of Tierra Bomba (Playa Linda, Punta Area, etc), snorkeling the reefs of the island, learning and practicing surfing as well as visiting Cartagena.
*Volunteers can freely use the Foundation’s surfboards.
