Aim of the project

To understand how the food we eat in our daily life is produced. To learn about the impact of food production on the environment. To learn new ways of food production through sustainable practices. To learn about the work the bees do and how to help them.

 

Work

As a volunteer on a workcamp, it is compulsory to work around 20-30 hours per week with the other participants. This project requires to work with agricultural tools like machetes, hoes, shovels. Be close to animals, insects, soil and get dirty.

 

Group

We expect 10 to 12 participants. The organization reserves the right to cancel the program in case of not having enough participants. People from 18 years all are welcomed.

 

Accommodation

The volunteers will be hosted in shared rooms with shared bathrooms. All meals will be provided. There is no internet connection in the place.

 

Project description

The group will work on activities on the field on organic agriculture, restoration of soil, organic orchards and bee keeping. The activities include preparing the soil, preparing compost, planting and harvesting. Cleaning paths on the cloudy forest and taking care of farm animals.

 

Free time

You will be hosted in the middle of the cloudy forest. Afternoons and evenings will be to share with the group, according to the group interests on dynamics, seminars, craft making, playing sports, swimming in the river, taking walks in the forest, riding horses or sharing around a bonfire.

 

Weather

Nowadays, due to climate change, weather can be unpredictable. We expect to be on summer during the workcamp with temperatures between 20 and 30 °C. Remember the workcamp is located in the cloudy forest, some days it could rain in the afternoon.

 

Practical

Arrival date: July 3^rd, 2022

Departure date: July 18th, 2022.

Meeting place:  We will wait for you at the Fundacion´s house in Quito, Ecuador. Address: Puruha Oe2-781 y Epiclachima. Ciudadela San José – La Magdalena. As a group we are going to travel to the Reserve where the workcamp will take part, located next to the Chiriboga town,     50.5 km away from Quito.

Host participation fee: $ 330 dollars it includes accommodation and three meals per day, any transportation cost is not included.

Electricity: It is the same as in the US, 120 v. Generally, you will not need a voltage convertor for your electronic devices. The plugs are A type, be sure you bring a plug adapter if you need one.

Packing list

• Rubber boots.
• Insect repellent.
• Working gloves.
• Light clothes. You do not need to spend a lot of money on clothes, you must bring clothes that can be damaged. It is better to have long pants and long sleeves shirts to protect you from mosquitoes or sun.
• Cap or hat.
• Towel
• Swimming suit.
• Personal hygiene products.
• Environmentally friendly soap.

 

Traveling information

By bus: You should arrive to Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito. From there take a bus to Quitumbe bus station. The last bus leaves the airport at 19:00. The cost is 3.00 USD. In the Terminal Quitumbe please take a taxi to the Fundacion´s house, the taxi drivers know our address.  The cost varies between 5 to 6 USD depending on the transit.

By taxi: You can take a taxi directly from the airport to the Fundacion´s house for 30 USD. We can book a taxi for you, just let us know before your arrival, in case you want to take by your own,  the  counter of taxi company is located at the exit of the luggage room, they know where is our address just ask them  to pick you up to the Foundation Proyecto Ecológico Chiriboga.
