About
Association for Greenlandic Children wants Camp K to give the inhabitants a fantastic, creative, active, interesting summer. The activities will take place Monday through Friday 12.00-18.00, and will fall into these categories: Music, Dance, Singing, Games, Sports and Excursions.
The volunteers will decide which activities to offer during the camp. You should expect long days, and it is expected that you will participate in all activities.
On Saturdays, we will invite the entire population to a social event from 18.00-21.00. This could be a night of music and dancing, teaching each other to play an instrument, cooking food from your home country, movie night etc.
Food and accommodation
Sleeping facilities:
The Association for Greenlandic Children ensures that you will get a place to stay. We expect you to stay on a mattress on the floor at the school. You will stay in a shared room with other volunteers of the same sex. Telephone coverage might be scarce, and you might not be able to use the internet more than once a week for a very short time.
Kitchen + bathroom facilities: Shared with volunteers of same-sex
All food will have to be transported by ship. Therefore, you should be able to adapt to these local conditions or bring a small stock of goods yourself. It can be difficult to be vegetarian or vegan since many meals in Greenland is based on meat and fish. Therefore, you will have to bring some stuff yourself if you need a special diet.
Vegetarian/vegan food is available, but it can be difficult to obtain the necessary protein, especially if you do not eat fish. Therefore, we recommend, that you bring some extra protein and snacks. We do have access to vegetables, that is mostly frozen and other canned food products. Let us know if you want a vegetarian meal on the aeroplane.
We will make cooking and cleaning teams. The group is responsible for shopping, cooking, cleaning etc. which is also going to take up some of your time every day.
Location and free time
We will fly directly from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq in Greenland and continue on to the town of Maniitsoq. We will stay at the school dorm in Maniitsoq from the 29th of June until the 2nd of July. In Maniitsoq we will get to know each other and do a lot of planning of the camp activities. We will also try to arrange an excursion in the area.
On the 2nd of July, we will go to Kangaamiut by ferry. This will be a very beautiful ferry ride. If you are lucky, you will get to see whales on this trip.
The nature in Greenland is in general amazing. In Kangaamiut, you can hike, go boat riding etc. in your leisure time.
Hiking in the falls is an amazing and unique experience. You can decide to organize a weekly leisure activity going hiking, fishing etc. on Sundays, which is your weekly day off.
Hopefully, the gym will be accessible to us around the clock. It will also be possible to play football or other sports with the community.
About the organizers
The Danish NGO ‘Greenlandic Children’ has been making projects for children and youth in Greenland since 1924. We have been doing work camps every summer since 2014.
Association Greenland Children is cooperating with the local community in the settlement of Kangaamiut, situated on the coast of West Greenland.
Kangaamiut is a very small settlement with just 302 inhabitants. Despite the size of the settlement, Kangaamiut is in many ways a well-equipped place with a supermarket, a school, a kinder garden, a church etc. However, in many ways, Kangaamiut is also a very remote place.
The municipality of Kangaamiut do not get a lot of worldly inspiration, and children are bored and under-stimulated during summertime when the school and the gym are closed.
About travel
!! Please do not buy your plane ticket to Copenhagen, Denmark, before MS Denmark allows it !!
We will all meet at Copenhagen Airport and travel to Greenland together. There are very few departure dates and it is important that the group travels together. Your plane tickets will therefore be organised and bought by MS Denmark, whereafter you will transfer the money back. We will provide you with banking details, and you are required to pay for the tickets before May 15th 2022.
Since the price of tickets is very high, and some volunteers already have an added travels expense for flying to Copenhagen, it has been decided to base the price of tickets on departure country:
4000 DKK (approx. 540€): Outside Europe
6000 DKK (approx. 800€): Europe (Russia incl.)
8000 DKK (approx. 1075€): Nordic Countries: (Denmark, Sweden, Norway)
The meeting point is Copenhagen Airport on the 29th of June around 07.00 in the morning. It is very important that you are at the airport on time, and therefore, it might be necessary for you to stay a night in Copenhagen from the 27th to the 28th of June. You will have to pay for this stay yourself.
It is possible to get stuck on the way home due to weather or technical problems, so we suggest that you plan to have at least two nights in Copenhagen before your connecting flight. This way the risk for missing your connecting flight is less.
More detailed information about transportation will be sent to you personally and given in your info sheet after acceptance.
