Sharing the Peace and Goodwill Message (Inglismaa)

Põnev ja ainulaadne projekt Inglismaal!

PARTNER: UNA Exchange is an international volunteering not-for-profit organisation which aims to engage young people in volunteering and learning opportunities and to deliver inclusive volunteering experiences to young people for the benefit of Wales. For this project, we have partnered with the national organisation, the Urdd (http://www.urdd.cymru/en/). Urdd Gobaith Cymru, often referred to as the Urdd, is a youth movement based in Wales. The organisation s aim is to give children and young people the chance to learn and socialise in the Welsh language and it has played a significant role over the past 90 years in promoting a Welsh and Welsh-speaking citizenship amongst Welsh youth. It is the largest organisation for children and young people in Wales, with over 55,000 members. The aim of the project is to bring the history of the Peace and Good Will message alive. Volunteers will be researching peace messages from their countries of original as well as around the world. They will also be reflecting on the peace and goodwill message of today and how that resonates with them and how they identify with the messages they find. The 8 international volunteers will be matched with 8 Welsh volunteers. The Sharing the Peace and Good Will Message project be included in the Raising Peace Campaign 2017.

WORK: The camp covers two weeks and will involve researching the peace and good will message through different media. Volunteers work will be part of the larger Wales for Peace Project (http://www.walesforpeace.org/wfp/index.html) which aims to inspire a new generation of internationalists through learning from Wales peace heritage. The project involves the individuals, communities and movements who have championed Wales peace building role in the world, from the First World War to today. In 1922, the very first Message of Peace and Goodwill was broadcast by the children of Wales to the rest of the world. It contained a straightforward wish – a world where there is: “no need for any of us, as we grow older, to show our pride for the country in which we were born by going out to hate and to kill one another. Volunteers will contribute to a project that helps support local communities to explore their heritage. The work will include researching peace through studying archive materials at the National Library in Aberystwyth as well as primary sources, digitalising stories and creating videos. Volunteers will also work on environmental projects within the local welsh community. During this time they will discuss and capture the views of the local people about their links to peace and heritage. The findings of the project will be published by Wales for Peace in various places online, through blogs, on YouTube, SoundCloud and across social media. If anyone has any equipment that may enhance the project, they are encouraged to bring it with them (smart phones, tablets video cameras etc.) but it is not an obligation.

ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD: Volunteers will have to camp on a camping site in West Wales as part of the project. The campsite will have access to a kitchen and shower facilities. Volunteers will not need to bring their own tents but will need to bring sleeping bags and warm clothes with them. Even though the project is in summer, the Welsh weather can be very unpredictable. The group will work together to organise the cooking and other domestic responsibilities so volunteers should bring some recipes from home to share.

LOCATION & LEISURE ACTIVITY: The project will be located near Llangrannog, a seaside village in West Wales. Llangrannog is well known to thousands of visitors as a tranquil, safe, seaside holiday village, with two public houses, Pentre Arms and The Ship, two cafe/restaurants, Patio Cafe and The Beach Hut (formerly Y Gegin Fach). It also has a general store, Glynafon. Llangrannog is not far from Newquay, a town with picturesque houses, pubs and restaurants in Cardigan Bay on the coast of West Wales. During the summer, New Quay becomes a bustling and vibrant holiday resort where sailing, fishing, water sports and relaxation, are among the main attractions.
